Each year on May 30, the world unites to recognise World MS Day – a powerful movement that brings together the global Multiple Sclerosis (MS) community to share stories, raise awareness, and advocate for change. While MS is often associated with mobility and neurological symptoms, its impact on respiratory health is a lesser-known – but important – part of the conversation.
At AirPhysio, we’re dedicated to improving lung health and quality of life for people managing all types of health challenges. That’s why this day matters to us, and why we’re proud to support the MS community.
What is World MS Day?
World MS Day is officially marked on 30 May, but events and campaigns run throughout the month of May. It’s a global opportunity for people living with MS, caregivers, advocates, and healthcare professionals to come together in solidarity, education, and action.
Since its inception in 2009 by the MS International Federation (MSIF), World MS Day has connected thousands of people around the world and sparked important conversations about support, research, and access to care.
What is Multiple Sclerosis?
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is one of the most common chronic diseases of the central nervous system (CNS) – which includes the brain and spinal cord. It’s an inflammatory, demyelinating condition caused by damage to myelin, the protective layer that insulates nerve fibers.
When myelin is damaged, the nerves struggle to send electrical impulses between the brain and the rest of the body. This leads to a range of unpredictable symptoms, which can include:
- Blurred or double vision
- Tingling and numbness
- Muscle weakness or unsteadiness
- Memory or concentration issues
- Fatigue and mood changes
Most people are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 40, and while there is no cure, a variety of disease-modifying therapies can help slow progression and manage symptoms.
Today, more than 2.8 million people around the world live with MS – and that number continues to grow. You can learn more or get involved at msif.org.
The Overlooked Connection: MS and Lung Health
While MS primarily affects nerves, it can also interfere with the muscles involved in breathing, including the diaphragm and intercostal muscles (between the ribs). As the disease progresses, this can lead to:
- Shortness of breath or labored breathing
- Reduced stamina during physical activity
- Weakened cough reflex, increasing the risk of chest infections
That’s where respiratory care becomes vital. Supporting lung function through targeted physiotherapy or using devices like AirPhysio can help maintain breathing strength and improve overall quality of life for people living with MS.
Why Breathing Exercises Matter
Incorporating daily breathing routines can help:
- Expand lung capacity
- Strengthen respiratory muscles
- Clear mucus and reduce infection risk
- Boost energy and reduce fatigue
Even small, consistent steps can make a noticeable difference in long-term respiratory wellness – and in how empowered people feel in managing their health.
Fast Facts About MS:
- Every 5 minutes, someone is diagnosed with MS
- Over 2.8 million people live with MS worldwide
- At least 30,000 children under 18 are affected
- 69% of people with MS are women
- 83% of countries face barriers to early diagnosis
- There is no single test to diagnose MS – neurologists rely on multiple assessments to confirm it
